William Henry Fry was an American composer and music critic from Philadelphia who began his career in the early‑to‑mid 19th century and worked within the classical and Romantic traditions. His output of orchestral, vocal and stage works drew on European Romantic idioms while incorporating American themes, and he used his positions as critic and conductor to promote native composition and musical life in the United States.
