Karel Husa was a Czech-born American composer and conductor who began his musical career in Prague, studied and worked in Europe before emigrating to the United States in 1954, and was associated primarily with contemporary classical music. His music is characterised by modernist and avant-garde techniques, evolving from European influences towards a focus on orchestral, chamber and wind-ensemble writing that often engaged with political themes and explored innovative sonorities and extended techniques.
