Fontella Bass

Fontella Bass was an American soul and R&B singer from St. Louis, Missouri, whose professional career began in the late 1950s and early 1960s after a background in gospel music. Her musical style combined gospel-rooted vocal intensity with soul, R&B and elements of jazz, and over the course of her career she moved between secular soul recordings and later collaborations that incorporated experimental and jazz-influenced approaches within the broader American soul tradition.
