Ilja Hurník was a Czech composer and pianist born in Prague in 1922 who began his career in the mid-20th century, composing across classical genres including orchestral, chamber, vocal, piano and stage music. His work employed a predominantly tonal, often lyrical language with touches of neoclassicism and humour, encompassed film and theatre scores as well as pedagogical pieces for children, and formed part of Czech musical life through composition and teaching.
