Juan Orrego-Salas was a Chilean composer and musicologist born in Santiago in 1919 who began his career in the mid-20th century working in the classical and contemporary classical genres. His compositions often blended European modernist techniques with Latin American rhythmic and folk elements, and his career included composing, musicological research and teaching that contributed to the promotion of contemporary music in Latin America and the United States.
