Joan La Barbara is an American vocalist and composer who began her career in New York in the late 1960s, working within experimental and contemporary classical music. She is known for developing and employing extended vocal techniques, including multiphonics, overtone singing and vocalise, and for her use of live electronics, electroacoustic studio methods and theatrical elements within works that have influenced contemporary vocal practice and the avant-garde music scene.
