Theodore Bikel was an Austrian-born American folk singer and actor who began his performing career in the mid-20th century after emigrating from Vienna to British Mandate Palestine as a child and later establishing himself in Britain and the United States. He specialised in a multilingual folk repertoire—particularly Yiddish and international songs—and combined theatre training with folk performance across recordings, concert stages and screen roles, playing an active part in the mid-century folk revival and Jewish cultural life.
