Auguste Franchomme was a French cellist and composer, born in Lille in 1808, who studied in Paris and began his career as a performer and teacher in the 1820s within the Romantic classical tradition. Associated with the Romantic era, his output and activities centred on solo and chamber repertoire and on advancing cello technique and pedagogy, influencing French musical life through performances in Parisian salons and through editions and compositions that expanded the instrument's repertoire.
