Adolf von Henselt was a German Romantic composer and virtuoso pianist born in Schwabach in 1814 who trained in Munich and established much of his career in Saint Petersburg from the 1830s. His music combined lyrical, poetic piano writing with rich harmonic colour and a focus on introspective miniatures and virtuosic études, and his long residency in Russia shaped his repertoire and his role as a teacher within Russian musical life.
