Lionel Tertis was an English violist born in West Hartlepool in 1876 who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and began his professional career in the early 20th century within the classical and chamber music traditions. He promoted the viola as a solo instrument through transcriptions, commissioning new works, teaching and performances, thereby contributing to the expansion of its repertoire and technique in British and European classical music.
