Giulietta Simionato was an Italian operatic mezzo-soprano who began her professional career in the 1930s, emerging from Italy's regional opera circuit into a sustained international operatic career. With a rich, flexible mezzo timbre she specialised in Italian operatic repertoire—particularly Verdi and verismo roles—and her repertoire and performance practice evolved to encompass both lyric and dramatic parts, shaping interpretations of mid-20th-century Italian opera.
