Elisabeth Rethberg

Elisabeth Rethberg was a German operatic soprano born in Mittweida, Saxony, who made her professional debut in the 1910s and established a career at major European houses before joining the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her repertoire encompassed lyric and spinto soprano roles in German and Italian opera, including works by Wagner, Verdi and Puccini, and across her career she shifted from lighter lyric parts into more dramatic roles while participating in early commercial recordings and international tours.
