Elizabeth Maconchy was an Irish-born British composer who began composing in the late 1920s and established a career in classical and chamber music across the mid-20th century. Her style is characterised by strong rhythmic drive, contrapuntal textures and expressive dissonance, showing an evolution from early tonal works toward a more individual modernist language and appearing across a body of chamber, orchestral and vocal works that contributed to British musical life.
