Mulatu Astatke is an Ethiopian musician and composer from Jimma, born in 1943, who studied music in London and the United States and began his professional career in the 1960s, working across jazz and popular music genres. He developed and popularised Ethio-jazz by combining Ethiopian pentatonic scales and traditional rhythms with jazz harmonies and Latin and funk instrumentation, a synthesis that shaped modern Ethiopian music and attracted international interest.
