Fikret Amirov was an Azerbaijani composer born in Ganja in 1922 who studied at the Baku conservatory and began his career during the Soviet era, working primarily in classical, orchestral and stage music. He synthesised Azerbaijani mugam modal traditions with Western symphonic forms, creating "symphonic mugams" and composing ballets, orchestral works and film music that contributed to mid-20th-century Azerbaijani and Soviet musical culture.
