Ernest Guiraud was an American-born French composer and teacher, born in New Orleans in 1837 who established his career in Paris and worked primarily in opera and incidental music. He combined a classically influenced, conservative compositional approach with practical skill in orchestration and arrangement, producing recitatives for later performances of Bizet's Carmen and serving as a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire.
