George Van Eps was an American jazz guitarist from Plainfield, New Jersey, who began his professional career in the 1930s and worked extensively in studio and small-group jazz contexts. He developed and popularised the seven-string guitar and a self-accompaniment fingerpicking technique that allowed simultaneous bass lines and chordal melodies, which informed jazz guitar practice and studio accompaniment approaches.
