Giovanni Battista Martini

Giovanni Battista Martini was an Italian Franciscan friar, composer and music theorist from Bologna who worked from the early 18th century as a church musician, teacher and writer in the Baroque and early Classical periods. His output combined sacred choral composition, theoretical treatises and extensive pedagogical activity, with a stylistic grounding in Baroque counterpoint that contributed to the transition toward Classical-era practices and influenced musical scholarship and education in Bologna.
