Wolfgang Fortner was a German composer, conductor and teacher whose career began in the late 1920s and developed through roles in performance and academia within the classical and contemporary music spheres. His output encompassed orchestral, chamber and vocal works that moved from neoclassical influences towards serial and avant-garde techniques after the Second World War, and he contributed to post-war musical reconstruction and contemporary music education in Germany.
