Sonny Rollins is an American jazz tenor saxophonist from New York City who began his professional career in the late 1940s and is associated with bebop and hard bop. He developed large-scale thematic improvisation and extended solo forms, frequently incorporated calypso and other Caribbean rhythms into his playing, and contributed to the evolution of post‑war jazz.
