Johann Gottfried Walther was a German Baroque composer, organist and music theorist, born in Erfurt in 1684 who built his career serving as an organist and court musician in Weimar from the early 18th century. His output comprises chorale-based organ works, transcriptions and keyboard concerted pieces that blend North German organ traditions with Italianate influences, and he compiled the Musicalisches Lexicon, an early German-language musical dictionary that contributed to music theory and lexicography in the Baroque era.
