Hall Johnson was an American composer, arranger and choral director born in Athens, Tennessee in 1888 who began his career in the early 20th century and formed the Hall Johnson Choir to perform and popularise African American spirituals. His work focused on arranging and preserving traditional spirituals for concert settings and media, with the choir appearing in Broadway productions and films and shaping the presentation of African American sacred music in concert and popular contexts.
