Mary Lou Williams

Mary Lou Williams was an American jazz pianist, arranger and composer, born in Atlanta in 1910 who began her professional career in the 1920s and was active in the Kansas City and New York jazz scenes. Her musical style evolved from stride and swing into bebop and modern jazz, encompassing solo piano, big-band arrangements and later sacred compositions, and she served as a composer, arranger and mentor within the jazz community.
