Shakers of Sabbathday Lake

The Shakers of Sabbathday Lake are a religious community-based musical tradition centred on the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, Maine, tracing their musical origins to the Shaker (United Society of Believers) movement established in the late eighteenth century. Their repertoire consists largely of a cappella hymns, dance songs and simple modal melodies used in communal worship and work, preserved through oral transmission and periodic public performances and archival recordings, and situated within American folk and religious music traditions.
