Symphony No. 1
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & Vladimir Ashkenazy & Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest
Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov, completed in 1895. A large-scale late-Romantic orchestral work, it employs lush, chromatic harmonies, expansive melodies and dramatic contrasts that reveal the composer's developing orchestral voice, and its adverse reception at first performance had a marked effect on his subsequent compositional output.
