The Nutcracker / Symphony No. 4 is a classical album pairing two orchestral works by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1892 and 1877–1878 respectively. Together they illustrate Tchaikovsky's range from ballet-focused, dance-inflected writing to large-scale symphonic form, characterised by sweeping melodies, colourful orchestration and contrasts between lyrical and dramatic passages, and they occupy distinct places in his career as examples of his late-ballet and mature symphonic output.
