Symphony no. 4
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra & Vladimir Ashkenazy
Symphony No. 4 is the fourth symphony by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1935–36. The work is large-scale and densely orchestrated, combining late-Romantic symphonic techniques with modernist dissonance and sardonic, sometimes abrasive gestures, and its withdrawal from performance in the 1930s under political pressure marks a turning point that shaped the direction of Shostakovich's subsequent output and Soviet musical history.
