Messiah is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. Scored for solo voices, choir and orchestra, it blends Baroque choral and orchestral textures with recitative and aria sections and is a central work in Handel’s later output and in the development of the English choral-oratorio tradition.
