Symphony No. 8

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Semyon Bychkov & Berliner Philharmoniker

Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65, is the eighth symphony by Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, completed in 1943. The large-scale, four-movement work is an expansive and sombre example of mid-20th-century symphonic writing, featuring dense orchestration, stark contrasts and anguished thematic material that reflect the wartime context and represent a darker, more introspective phase in Shostakovich's output.
First released: 1st December 1992
