Symphony no. 5
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & hr‐Sinfonieorchester & Eliahu Inbal
Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, premiered in 1937. The four-movement orchestral work combines late-Romantic orchestration with modernist harmonic language, juxtaposing sombre, introspective passages with more extroverted, march-like and fanfare textures, and served as a pivotal public statement in Shostakovich's career amid the political pressures of 1930s Soviet Union.
