Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed and first performed in 1888. The work is a Romantic-era symphony characterised by sweeping, lyrical melodies, rich orchestration and a recurring fate motif, and it occupies a central position in the composer's mature symphonic output as an example of his late-period exploration of form and emotional narrative.
