Messiah is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, first performed in Dublin in 1742. Musically it exemplifies the Baroque oratorio with its combination of solo arias, recitatives and expansive choral writing, and it was composed during Handel's English period where it occupies a central place among his English oratorios and contributed to the formation of the choral repertoire.
