Symphony no. 7
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Российский национальный оркестр & Paavo Järvi
Symphony No. 7 is the seventh symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1941. The symphony is a large-scale orchestral work in the mid-20th-century Soviet symphonic tradition, characterised by expansive orchestration, march-like motifs, long developmental spans and stark contrasts between sombre passages and bombastic climaxes, and it is closely associated with the wartime siege of Leningrad, forming a prominent wartime statement in Shostakovich's catalogue.
