Symphony no. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & Boston Symphony Orchestra & Erich Leinsdorf
Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. Scored for a large orchestra, it juxtaposes a dramatic funeral march with expansive lyrical passages and vivid orchestral colour, and represents a shift in Mahler's output from his earlier song-based cycles towards a more concentrated instrumental symphonic approach that influenced later symphonic writing.
