Peter Grimes is an opera by the English composer Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1945. Musically it blends mid-20th-century tonal and dissonant language with vivid orchestral colouring and seascape-like motifs, employing choral textures and recurring orchestral ideas to convey psychological complexity, and it represented a turning point in Britten's career and in post-war English opera.
