The Nutcracker is a ballet by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, premiered in 1892. It features vivid late-Romantic orchestration, memorable melodic dances and varied instrumental colour, and the orchestral suite drawn from the ballet occupies an important place in the ballet and concert repertoire as an example of Tchaikovsky's mature ballet writing.
