String Sextets
Album by Johannes Brahms & Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble
String Sextets are two chamber works by the German composer Johannes Brahms, composed in 1860 and 1864. Scored for two violins, two violas and two cellos, they blend Romantic-era harmonic richness with classical forms through lyrical melodies, contrapuntal textures and expanded string sonority, and they stand as significant early entries in Brahms's chamber-music output that helped establish his reputation in the 1860s.

First released: April 1993
