Winterreise is a song cycle for voice and piano by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, composed in 1827. Composed in a stark, intimate lieder style, the cycle pairs spare, often chromatic piano textures with declamatory vocal lines to depict a solitary, travelling winter journey, and it represents one of Schubert's late song cycles that helped shape the German Romantic art-song tradition.
