Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902 and first performed in 1904. The work is characterised by expansive late-Romantic orchestration, dramatic contrasts between sombre, march-like material and luminous, lyrical passages across its five movements, and marks a shift in Mahler's focus toward purely instrumental symphonic writing.
