Symphony No. 1 is a symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1888. The work employs late-Romantic orchestral forces, folk-influenced melodies and programme-like episodes alongside expansive formal architecture and inventive orchestration, marking Mahler's early shift from song-oriented composition to large-scale symphonic writing and presaging the scope of his later symphonies.
