The Firebird / Petrushka
Album by Igor Fyodorovitch Stravinsky & Pierre Monteux
The Firebird and Petrushka are ballets for orchestra by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, composed in 1910-11 and 1911-13 respectively. They draw on Russian folk material and late Romantic orchestral colours; The Firebird has luminous textures while Petrushka uses bitonality, shifting rhythms, unexpected accents and sharp instrumental contrasts, and both works came early in Stravinsky's career and helped him move toward a more modern musical language.
