String Quartets

Album by Joseph Haydn & Franz Xaver Richter & Smetana Quartet

String Quartets is a collection of chamber music by Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, composed between the 1760s and the 1790s. The works, scored for two violins, viola and cello, are characterised by classical forms, clear tonal architecture and conversational interplay between the instruments, and they played a central role in defining the string quartet genre within Haydn's output and in the subsequent development of Western chamber music.
