Messiah is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, first performed in 1742. The work blends Baroque choral and orchestral writing with solo arias and contrapuntal choruses drawn from biblical texts, exemplifying Handel's mature dramatic and vocal writing and marking a significant development in his output of large-scale English sacred music.
