Preludes, Op. 34 is a set of 24 piano preludes by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1932. The pieces traverse a wide emotional and tonal range—from terse, acerbic miniatures to more lyrical, reflective pages—employing concise motifs, sharp dissonances and ironic turns that reflect Shostakovich's early exploration of modernist and neoclassical piano idioms and his developing voice after his initial successes in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
