Symphony no. 5

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & The Philadelphia Orchestra & Eugene Ormandy

Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1937. Composed after the official denunciation of some of his earlier works, it signalled a pivotal moment in his career by adopting a broadly tonal symphonic framework that juxtaposes lyrical passages, stark brass and percussion-driven climaxes, and modernist dissonance to create a dramatic, large-scale orchestral narrative.
