Messiah is an English-language oratorio by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. Musically it combines Baroque orchestration with solo arias and choral writing to set biblical texts in English, marking Handel's move from Italian opera toward the English oratorio tradition and influencing the development of large-scale choral works in the 18th century.
