La Damnation de Faust is a dramatic legend by French composer Hector Berlioz, composed and first performed in 1846. The work combines operatic, symphonic and choral forces with Berlioz's characteristic colourful orchestration and vivid dramatic writing, and it occupies a distinctive place in his mature output as an experimental hybrid between staged opera and concert piece that helped shape later nineteenth-century French musical practice.
