String Quartets nos. 5, 7, 9
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & St. Petersburg String Quartet
String Quartets Nos. 5, 7 and 9 is a set of chamber works by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1952, 1960 and 1964 respectively. These quartets, written during his middle and mature periods, exemplify his chamber-music style with compact motifs, stark contrasts of mood, contrapuntal writing and an often austere tone, and they form instalments in the composer's string quartet cycle that trace his evolving musical language.
First released: April 2001
