Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1888. Blending late-Romantic orchestration with expansive structures, it employs folk-influenced melodies, dramatic contrasts and evocative orchestral colour, and it represents Mahler's emergence as a symphonist shaping the large-scale emotional and sonic ambitions of his subsequent works.
