Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902. The work is a large-scale late-Romantic orchestral piece characterised by dramatic contrasts, intricate counterpoint and rich, varied instrumentation, marking Mahler's return to purely instrumental symphonic writing and signalling a stylistic shift towards more abstract forms in his middle period.
